EPA Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report Missing
The United States has a clear annual obligation as a member of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: submit its greenhouse gas emissions inventory by April 15.
This was not done. However, CBS News has obtained the data.
This report, officially called the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sink Inventory, serves two essential purposes:
It shows the government and public exactly where the nation's greenhouse gas pollution originates
It provides the data needed to develop effective pollution reduction policies and track progress toward climate goal
The latest greenhouse gas report (covering 1990-2023) shows mixed results:
• The US is reducing its most harmful emissions, but not quickly enough to meet climate targets
• Environmental organizations fear current policies could reverse this progress and increase carbon pollution in coming years

This article, written by Grace Manthey, the senior visual data journalist and data team coordinator for CBS News, answers important questions typically provided by the EPA such as:
How much has the U.S. reduced its greenhouse gas pollution?
Which greenhouse gas does the U.S. produce the most?
Which industry sectors produce the most greenhouse gas emissions?
How does the U.S. generate its electricity and why it matters?
